Bill Rod – Life Member

Having always had an interest in making things, Bill began wood turning in Feilding in the late 1980's. With no tuition he had to work out things for himself.

About two years after moving to Wanganui in 1987 he was invited by then Life member Harry Corbett to join the woodcraft group, where he quickly learned more skills from other members who were only to willing to pass on their knowledge. Many hours were spent honing his skills as well as his knowledge of the various woods he worked with.

Many hours have been spent with various other members cutting down trees and making timber ready for turning. This gave him the knowledge of the different timbers and their properties - whether they were poisonous to work with and how hard they were to turn.

As a committee member and Treasurer for several years Bill was always happy to pass on his knowledge. He took part in all the fund-raising events and contributed several items for raffles for the club. He also exhibited his work at the National Woodskills Festivals and many places around the country, winning several awards and recognitions for items entered.

Over twenty years ago he was pivotal in setting up a stall  with other members at the weekly market to display the work of club members.

After 30 or more years in various positions Bill was made a Life Member in February 2021.

Sadly, ill health now prevents him from turning
